Starter device comprising an electric starter motor (3) and a main switch (10) of the normally open type connected between a supply input (3b) of the electric motor (3) and a battery (7). The device comprises a main switch (10) activation circuit comprising a first and a second switches (15, 16) arranged in series with each other and connected between the battery (7) and a main switch (10) activation device. The first switch is in the form of a manually operated switch operated by an ignition key (20) and the second switch (16), of the normally open type, is closed by a power enable signal output by an electronic control circuit (22) designed to inhibit the production of the enable signal when the voltage of the battery (7) falls below a threshold value. An electrical connection device extends between the supply input (12a) of the main switch (10) and a control input (16i) of the second switch (16) in order to provide a supply voltage to the control input and keep the second switch (16) closed independently of the production of the enable signal. <IMAGE>
