A specimen collection fluid which comprises a sterile buffered aqueous solution comprising an aliphatic aldehyde, at a molar concentration of 0.8M to 3.4M, a heavy metal salt, at a molar concentration of 0.04M to 0.2M, and preferably an anticoagulant, at a molar concentration of 0.27M to 0.45M, the solution having a pH in the range of 6.8 to 8.0. |
