Optical amplifier optical communication system with gain dependent on the input signal polarization

The communication system includes a modulator (21) which converts a modulated input which may be phase or wavelength dependent into light polarisation in an optical fibre. The polarity is modulated using a polarisation disperser (22) which generates a scrambled polarity optical message. The polarisation disperser is formed from the optical fibre and is used in each optical repeater amplifier. The optical repeater amplifiers are preferably formed from erbium dopes fibres.
