Power line fault locating systems employing combinations of conducted transient signals, radiated electromagnetic signals produced either by an air-gap arc or by lightening discharge, and knowledge of the specific path of the power lines associated with the fault. The arrival time of conducted transient signals produced by the fault are detected by a fault recording sensor (FRS). The time of arrival of low level electromagnetic radiation (VHF/UHF) caused by arcing associated with faults on power lines is detected at at least one arc detection sensor (ADS), located some distance from the power line. The two sensors for detecting the arrival times of the conducted and radiated signals transmit data to a central power line fault locating analyzer (PLFLA) that receives and manipulates the data to determine the location of the power line fault. |
