<p>An apparatus comprises an actuator 15 having a control unit which receives signals from various sensors 31-35. A key operated ignition switch 41 is connected to the actuator 15 such that when the ignition switch 41 is closed the actuator 15 is rendered operative. Another switch, eg brake light switch 44, may also be connected to the actuator 15 so that if an operator activates a brake, prior or subsequent to insertion of the ignition key, the actuator 15 is rendered operative and clutch 3, which may be a friction clutch or a magnetic powder clutch etc, may be disengaged. Other switches/sensors may be employed to monitor the activities of the operator, for example switches/senors which trigger the actuator 15 in response to stepping on a gas pedal, shifting a transmission lever 30, activating/deactivating an alarm etc. Also disclosed are several methods of operating the actuator 15, for a finite length of time, in response to forces applied to the transmission lever 30.</p> |
