A washing machine is disclosed and includes a tub having a drum (30) rotatably mounted therein for receiving a load of clothes and counterbalance means (40) arranged to move along a channel (41a,41b) during rotation of the drum (30) towards a counterbalancing position in response to an imbalance in a load in the drum (30). An orifice (43a) is defined in the channel (41a,41b) to enable a supply of lubricating liquid to the counterbalance means (40) and a vent (43b) to allow for the escape of air from the channel (41a,41b) during the supply of said liquid. In the preferred embodiment, the oil supply orifice (43a) and air vent (43b) are positioned at an angle of 90 DEG with respect to the axis of rotation of the spin basket (30).
