PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high purity phosphorus pentachloride having a sharp distribution of particle size and excellent in free fluidity and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: This granular phosphorus pentachloride has such particle characteristics that it contains particles of 150 to 710μm particle size by >=95wt.% and has high free fluidity with <=40 deg. angle of repose. In the production of the granular phosphorus pentachloride by the reaction of chlorine and phosphorus trichloride in a solvent, the reaction is effected while the chlorine in the reaction system is always made present in a larger amt. than the stoichiometric amt. to the phosphorus trichloride so that phosphorus pentachloride in a supersaturation state is crystallized form the reaction system and then recovered.
