PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame-retardant polyvinyl alcohol binder fiber which contains a poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer, a poly(vinyl chloride) polymer and a flame retarder, shows excellent flame retardancy and adhesion and is useful for producing wall paper and shoji (a paper sliding door in Japan) paper by making paper from a mixture thereof with other fibers. SOLUTION: This binder fiber contains a poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer and a poly(vinyl chloride) polymer at a weight ratio of 60/40-90/10 and a flame retarder, (for example, SnO2 , H2 SnO3 , Sb2 O3 , Sb2 O5 , etc.), in an amount of 1-10 pts.wt., preferably 2-8 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the polymers. A gel-extruding spinning process in which boric acid is added to the spinning dope and the dope is extruded into fibers gives the objective binder fiber excellent in flame retardant effect and small in denier deviation, since the flame retarder resists to exude from the inside of the fibers. |
