PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sintered compact which has low porosity and in particular, is excellent in wear resistance and fracture resistance at a high temp. and appropriately used for a cutting tool, etc. SOLUTION: This sintered compact contains 0.16 to 2.1wt.% of the magnesium element and 0.7 to 4.8wt.% of the ytterbium element based on 100wt.% of the sintered compact, wherein the total content of the magnesium and ytterbium elements is <=6.2wt.% and also, the sintered compact may contain <=0.64wt.% and in particular >=0.32wt.% of the aluminum element as a contaminant from a mixer that is made of aluminum and used at the time of mixing raw materials of the compact. In the sintered compact, the content of β-Si3 N4 having large particle size is a specified value or lower and micro-cracks are hardly generated. Also, when the compact is provided on its surface with plural coating layers consisting of Al2 O3 , AlON, TiN, etc., the sintered compact is particularly excellent in wear resistance, etc. |
