The tiles (2) support the slates over a length less than the length of the slates themselves. They are fixed to the roof structure, and the slates are in horizontal transverse rows forming a virtually continuous surface. The tiles form a continuous surface and overlap in this direction. The slates overlap in the downwards-sloping direction, whereas in this direction the tiles have topped joint surfaces offset for the slate thickness where the slates overlap.
