PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new antibiotic useful as antibacterial agent, an antitumor agent, etc., having antibacterial and antitumor activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including methicillin-resistant bacteria, by culturing a bacterium belonging to the genus Streptomyces, capable of producing polyketomycin. SOLUTION: This new antibiotic polyketomycin (salt) is expressed by the formula, shows antibacterial and antitumor activity against grampositive and gram-negative bacteria including methicillin-resistant bacteria and is useful as an antibacterial agent and an antitumor agent. This antibiotic is obtained by inoculating a bacterium [e.g. Streptomyces sp. MK277-AF1 strain (FERM P-15,442)] capable of producing polyketomycin of the formula into a medium, subjecting the bacterium to rotary shaking culture at 30 deg.C for five days to give a culture solution of a seed mash, adding the culture solution a liquid medium, subjecting the bacterium to rotary shaking culture at 27 deg.C for 4 days and collecting the product from the culture product by extraction, etc. |
