<p>Novel phenyl 10H-phenothiazine-10-carboxylates of general formula (I), combinations of which with Lewis acids are useful as regioselective nuclear chlorination catalysts for aromatic hydrocarbons. The catalysts are advantageous in that the regioselectivity is not lowered even when the nuclear chlorination is conducted at a reaction temperature exceeding 45 °C and that the regioselectivity is enhanced with an increasing degree of chlorination. In general formula (I), x is halogeno, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, nitro or cyano and n is an integer of 0 to 5, with the proviso that when n is 2 or above, X's may be the same or different from each other; s is an integer of 0 to 5; t is an integer of 0 to 4; and u is an integer of 0 to 4, with the proviso that the sum total of n and s is 5 or below.</p> |
