The switching device has a low-voltage switch (3) arranged in the main current path. The low voltage switch (3) includes a series connection of a trigger element (M,T) which samples the current to be switched off, and a main switch point (S1) with nominal current contacts. A secondary current path is connected in parallel to the main switch point. The secondary current path includes a controllable semiconductor switch (HL) and a discharge element (E) connected in parallel. A control device (ST) for the semiconductor switch (HL) is connected parallel to the main switch point. The secondary current path has an auxiliary switch point connected in series with the parallel connected controllable semiconductor switch and the discharge element (E). The auxiliary switch point opens on switching off with a time delay after opening the semiconductor switch (HL).
