A process for the treatment of biodegradable waste which is operated as a batch process and in which a first quantity of biodegradable waste is introduced into a reaction vessel which is then sealed and subjected to a process of digestion in the absence of oxygen, characterised in that a second quantity of biodegradable waste is introduced into the vessel at a time after commencement of said process which is selected in dependence or when at least one of a number of predetermined conditions of the reaction have been reached, and then said process of digestion is continued so as to produce a quantity of a resultant digestate material. Generally only one extra quantity will be introduced as between the beginning and the end of the process; and the various conditions which can be monitored include the state of methane production, the free fatty acid content, the nitrogen level and the carbon dioxide content.
|
