<p>Light having a plurality of polarization planes (10 and 12) is made to enter a polarization converter by which the polarization planes are made to be identical to each other, and light having an increased luminous intensity is taken out. The polarization converter is used as a polarizer of a liquid crystal display (optical converter) or placed before a polarizer. The molecules of optical rotating material (1) turn the polarization plane of a first incident vector component (10) which has a horizontal polarization plane by a rotation angle υ1 when the vector component passes through the material (1) and turns the polarization plane of a second incident vector component which has a vertical polarization plane by a rotation angle υ2 (> υ1). As a result, light rays having horizontal polarization planes are increased and light rays having vertical polarization planes are decreased. In order to give the anisotropy of the angle of rotation to a number of molecules constituting optical rotating molecules, three-dimensional arrangements of the composition elements of the molecules of the optical rotating material are approximately uniform. With this constitution, the ratio of utilization of the incident light is improved, a bright display screen is obtained and the electric power consumption of a light source is reduced.</p> |
