The invention relates to a method for multimode gesture dialogue in a virtual environment. The method uses gesture communication means (1, 2) whose state is defined by a set of parameters (4). It uses at least two mutually exclusive operating modes (5) endowed with an order of priority. Passage from one mode to another is engendered by the step of crossing a boundary (6) by the gesture communication means (1, 2), the boundary (6) being defined by the value of one or more parameters of the set (4). Application: man-machine gesture dialogue.
