A device for detecting carious tooth material and/or tooth-coloured tooth restoration is to provide a means by which dental caries can be precisely detected and localised. This is achieved by a laser source (1) to which is connected a first optical fibre (2), the free end of which can be directed on the tooth material, and a system (3, 4) for receiving the light emitted by the tooth material after laser irradiation or the light from the laser source scattered on the tooth material, said system (3, 4) being connected to an optical evaluation unit (5). There is at least one optical filter in the path of the emitted or scattered light to suppress reflected or scattered laser radiation of unchanged wavelength.
