A flat panel display (11) facilitates operation of one or more electrical circuit control devices (39) by providing chengeable images which convey information pertinent to operation of the circuit. The manually movable member (41) of the circuit control device, such as a turnable knob for example, is attached to the face of the display (11) within the image area of the display (11). The display (11) has a light transparent zone (32) within the image area which extends to the back of the display (11) to enable photoelectric detection of the setting of the movable member (41) by a detector (42) which is situated behind the flat panel display (11). Row and column busbar conductors (16, 17) within the flat panel display (11), which control light intensity at image pixels, are routed around the light transparent zone (32) to prevent optical signal degradation.
