<p>A ceramic or metal furnace fixture (14) or other substrate is clad on a surface (18a, 18b) thereof by an impermeable top layer (22a, 22b) of thermally deposited unstabilized zirconia. The unstabilized zirconia is provided in powder form having a purity of at least about 98.7 weight percent and a mesh size substantially in the range of about 15 to 120 microns and is thermally sprayed onto the substrate. The unstabilized zirconia may be deposited at a rate of greater than 0.0005 inch per pass of plasma spray, with a porosity no greater than about 2 percent by volume.</p> |
