PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound from orcinol and methylating agent by using a specific alkali metal salt in a specific solvent under mild conditions by a simple operation by one process in high yield. SOLUTION: Orcinol of formula I is methylated with a methylating agent by using a cyclic ether-based solvent as a solvent in a suspension of fine powder of an alkali metal salt to give 1,3-dimethoxy-5methylbenzene of formula II. Tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxane is preferable as the cyclic ether-based solvent. Fine powder of sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate is preferable as the fine powder of the alkali metal salt. Dimethyl sulfate is the optimum as the methylating agent and the methylation reaction is preferably carried out at 20-70 deg.C. 1,3-Dimethoxy-5-methylbenzene is found as a component of a modern rose and is useful as a perfume improver having sedative effect, a perfume component, etc. |
