PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To unnecessitate an electrode, to effect orientation in an arbitrary direction and to form the subject element in an arbitrary shape such as a thin film, fiber or bulk shape by orienting diamagnetic anisotropic particles under certain regularity. SOLUTION: Diamagnetic particles having anisotropy▵x are oriented under certain regularity and the objective nonlinear optical element is produced. An adoptable method for producing the element is not especially limited if it is a means usable in a magnetic field, but in consideration of the fact that the magnetic field is formed in a limited space, not a vapor phase method requiring a large-scale device but a liq. phase method is suitable. When particles of a nonlinear optical material are dispersed in a polymerizable monomer and the element is produced, a thermopolymerizable monomer, a radical polymerizable monomer or a photopolymerizable monomer may be used as the polymerizable monomer but the photopolymerizable monomer is preferably used because it is necessary to carry out reaction in the limited space of a magnetic field and light is used as a reaction controlling means.
