摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to decrease the fluctuations in light emission intensity when there is writing in another line by making the crest value of the writing signal for starting an electric discharge impressed on a column line or row line and the crest value of a maintenance signal nearly the same. SOLUTION: The crest value of the writing signal Xwp applied on one electrode of a fluorescent lamp is made nearly the same as the crest value of the maintenance signal Xsp applied on the electrode. Namely, the crest value of the writing pulse Xwp and the crest value of the maintenance pulse Xsp are the same and, therefore, a difference does not arise in comparison of the voltage between the X-Yi lines when the row line Yj is scanned, i.e., in the period [2] and the voltage between the X-Yi lines when the row line Yk is scanned, i.e., in the period [3]. Consequently, the difference in the intensity between the discharge generated in the period [2] and the discharge generated in the period [3] is lessened and the change in the light emission luminance generated by the writing in another line is lessened.
