Mounted on a frame (4) of the machine is a tamping unit (7) which is displaceable in height by means of a hydraulic cylinder/piston drive (11). The tamping unit has on a support (9) tamping tools (16, 17), which are displaceable in pairs in relation to one another, and drives (19) for vibrating and positioning two tamping-tool holding devices (21) and tamping picks (25) of the tamping unit. The two tamping-tool holding devices are pivotable in relation to one another and are of fork-shaped design. These holding devices comprise upwardly extending pivot arms which are arranged essentially above the rail and which are mounted on the tamping-tool support (9). The pivot arms are connected to said drives (19) which are arranged on the support. The tamping-tool holding devices (21) have side arms, extending transversely to the axis of the track and downwards, for receiving the picks (25) which can be submerged into the ballast bed of the track on both sides of the rail. Such tamping units are simple and robust in construction, as a result of which the service life and the compacting effect are increased. <IMAGE> |
