The refuse container has an insert (1) of plate-like, concave, convex, dish or trough shape sized in relation to the cross-section of the container so that when inserted it separates the container into upper and lower sealed parts with any setting of useful volume. The insert can have material attachments on its edge to fit dowels, screws, clips or other known fixing members. The insert can be fixed on the container wall through openings in the wall of the container. The insert can have on the underneath spacers to stand above the base of the container.
