Multilayer interference pigments are claimed which consist of a transparent carrier with alternating layers of low and high RI (difference at least 0.1) metal oxide obtained by wet process coating and hydrolysis of the appropriate water-soluble metal compounds on the carrier, this being followed by separating-off, drying and optionally calcining the product. The carrier material is suspended in water and alternatingly coated with metal oxide hydrate as above, with simultaneous addition of an acid or base to give the appropriate pH for deposition of the oxide hydrate.
