Plant for passive treatment of contaminated ground water

Plant for removing contaminants from ground water has an impervious sealing wall which extends the vertical depth of the contaminated section and across the flow direction of an aquifer (13) and has a passage through which the water can flow. The passage incorporates a chamber (4) packed with treatment material and the dimensions (4) are such that it can withstand the pressure of the surrounding earth and water when empty. Also claimed is a method for constructing the plant comprising: (i) digging dry trenches to the underlying impervious layer (12); (ii) building the floor (6) and the walls (7,8) of the chamber; (iii) filling the space between the trench sides and the two end walls (7,8) which lie across the flow direction with gravel (20,21); (iv) back-filling the space, adjacent to the two side walls which lie parallel to the flow direction with a binder material; (v) building and sealing the sealing wall against the chamber with a tongue plate, which is built half into the sealing wall and half into the chamber wall.
