The system comprises a ball joint (3) which is manually positioned into a clamped (2) position using a slide (5) running in a guide in a linear axis fixed to the joint ball. The conjoint degree of freedom of axis and ball gives the actuator or sensor element one axial (17) and three rotary (22,23,24) movements. The sensor's etc active end (16) is positioned freely within the body cavity (25). The self-locking of the slide is afforded by a tool-accessed threaded spindle (10) for the axial movement.
