To produce protective vehicle seat covers, a flat tube (1) of film material is cut longitudinally and spread open into a slit (2). Welded seams (9) are formed along at least one of the edges (5,6), with a gap between them according to the width of the seat covering. Cut-outs (7, 8) in a V-shape define edge (5,6) limits, with a double welded seam (10) between them flanking a weakened line (14). The V-sections (7, 8) are removed, to give a prepared flat tube (1) ready for delivery.
