The invention concerns a method of producing a commutator (20) which comprises segments (21), in particular of copper, which are preferably connected to form a segment ring and are anchored in a plastics moulding compound (23), in particular of phenolic resin, as a result of being compressed therewith. A homogeneous oxide layer (22), preferably a copper oxide layer predominantly containing copper I oxide, is applied to the surface of the segments (21), compression with the plastics moulding compound then being carried out. In this way, a particularly stable connection is produced and the commutator is consequently suitable for use at high speeds.
