Apparatus and method for forming a cut end of a surgical suture tip

An apparatus and method for forming a cut end of a surgical suture tip having a length and a cross-section that is perpendicular to the length. The apparatus includes a first cutting die having a first face with a channel therein for receiving at least a portion of the cross-section of the surgical suture tip, the channel is aligned along a common axis. A second cutting die having a second face is also provided. At least one mechanical actuator is provided for moving the first face of the first cutting die against the second face of the second cutting die and for contacting the channel in the first cutting die against an outer surface of the cross-section of the surgical suture tip. The channel in the first cutting die and the second face define a singular cutting die opening when the first face of the first cutting die is positioned against the second face of the second cutting die. The singular cutting die opening has a cross-section perpendicular to the common axis that is small enough to compress the cross-section of the surgical suture tip when the first face of the first cutting die is positioned against the second face of the second cutting die. A cutting blade is provided for cutting the surgical suture tip when the first face of the first cutting die is positioned against the second face of the second cutting die.
