Liquid crystal compositions comprising a compound of general formula (I-a) or the like as a first component and a compound of the general formula (II): R<5>-(B)-Z<2>-(C)-R<6> (wherein R<1>, R<5> and R<6> are each alkyl or the like; Z<2> is -CH2CH2- or the like; and A<1>, B and C are each 1,4-cyclohexylene or the like) or the like as a second component, and containing a chiral compound of general formula (X) as a third component. The compositions satisfy the various requirements for STN display systems and have wide d/P margins to cope with enlarging LCD panels.
