PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of malodor and bulking, to increase the decomposition effect of organic matter such as BOD components and to miniaturize an deodorizing device or to eliminate the need thereof by a device whose equipment cost and operation cost are extremely lowered and furthermore whose maintenance is easy with simple equipment. SOLUTION: In this sludge treating device, a contact bed 2 in which plural contact bodies 3 in the shape of a rectangular plate each whose peripheral surface is formed of a wire net and which are packed with pellets 4 consisting of humus materials and are erected are arranged side by side horizontally at fixed intervals opposite to each other and a diffusing means 6 arranged below the contact bed 2 for discharging an air current into liquid to be treated flow passages 12 in the vertical direction formed between the contact bodies 3 are installed in a vessel in which bubbles are discharged to cause sludge to flow upward in the liquid to be treated flow passages 12 to reform it into order suppressed sludge.
