PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new benzyl cyanide derivative exhibiting excellent control effects with respect to the prevention, treatment and penetrative translocation of plant diseases in a wide range, expressing good safety for crops, and thereby useful an antimicrobial agent for agriculture and horticulture and expressing excellent antimicrobial effects. SOLUTION: A benzyl cyanide derivative of formula I [R is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, a halogenated alkyl, a halogenated alkoxy, a halogen, (substituted) phenoxy; Y is H, a halogen] or its salt. For example, 2'-(2-chlorobenzyloxy)-α-(1- imidazolyl)benzyl cyanide. The compound of formula I is obtained through a process for reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III (X is Cl, Br) in the presence of a base in a solvent-free state or in a proper solvent, and further through processes for reacting the obtained compound of formula IV with a compound of the formula: M-CN (M is an alkali metal, trimethylsilyl) and then with a halogenating agent and imidazole.
