PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce both a surface fibrillated fiber, comprising fibrils covering most of the surfaces of main fibers in the fiber axial direction and useful as a filter medium, a sheetlike material, etc., for artificial leathers by carrying out the solution spinning of a polymer containing a sufficient amount of a cellulosic ester under specific conditions and a fibril-containing split fiber by beating the resultant surface fibrillated fiber. SOLUTION: This surface fibrillated fiber is obtained by carrying out a method for jetting a coagulant fluid for a polymer from a coagulant fluid jetting port at >=0 deg. and <90 deg. angle from the discharging line direction of a spinning solution, etc., when dissolving the polymer containing at least 30wt.% cellulosic ester in a solvent and discharging the resultant spinning solution from a discharging port for the spinning solution. The prepared surface fibrillated fiber comprises fibrils B and B', having <=2μm diameter and covering most of main fibers A in the fiber axial direction. The surface fibrillated fiber is beaten to afford a fibril-containing split fiber.
