A hydrotreating reactor (20), comprises: (a) a reactor vessel (99)with a generally vertical axis of symmetry (36) and upper(UU) and lower (LL) reactor half portions; (b) recirculation means (44) for recirculating a partially reacted liquid feedstock mixture within the reactor vessel; (c) feedstock sparger means (24), separate from recirculation means, within the lower reactor half portion for discharging feedstock into the vessel in at least two separate reactor locations through at least two sparger discharge apertures; and (d) a baffle, for reducing the magnitude of undesired momentum component of feedstock discharged from sparger, located so that discharged feedstock impinges on baffle.
