PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely and efficiently obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate raw material for medical and agricultural chemicals, etc., by reacting bromobutane with an alkali metal cyanide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and an aqueous medium within a specific range of temperature. SOLUTION: This valeronitrile is obtained by reacting (A) 1-bromobutane with (B) an alkali metal cyanide in the presence of (C) a phase transfer catalyst and (D) an aqueous medium at 40-55 deg.C of a reaction temperature. Preferably, a using amount of the component C is 1-10mol% per 1mol of the component A. Preferably, a molar ratio of the component B to the component A is 0.95-1.10 times of a theoretical amount. Preferably, an alkali metal hydroxide in an amount of 1-5mol % per 1mol of the component B is added. Preferably, valeronitrile after the reaction is further washed by a reducing agent. |
