A pulley block comprises: (i) a housing (2) with a hook (17) for supporting a load; (ii) a first pulley (3), annular in shape; and (iii) a second pulley (4) situated transversely inside the first one, with the axes of rotation intersecting at a central point (O) situated in line with the pulley block's axis of suspension (18) and passing through the load's centre of gravity. Also claimed is a load handling apparatus comprising the above pulley block, with a first and a second cable engaging the first and second pulleys respectively, each cable having one fixed extremity, and an other extremity mounted on a windlass drum. Further claimed is the use of the above handling apparatus for handling nuclear fuel.
