An alumina cement manufacturing process involves kiln firing of a bauxite and lime charge to produce a clinker of Al2O3 (A) and CaO (C), partially in C12A7 form and partially in CA form, followed by grinding with optional secondary components to form cement. The novelty is that the Al2O3/CaO concentration ratio in the initial charge is 1.03-1.25, firing is carried out under an oxidising atmosphere, the FeO content in the clinker is less than 3% and the ground cement has a particle size distribution with a Rosin-Rammler diagram gradient of 0.75-1.10. Also claimed are (i) an apparatus for carrying out the above process; and (ii) an alumina cement having the above characteristics.
