The circuit (1) has a power supply (2) to switch ON a discharge lamp (6). An abnormality detector (5) detects any abnormality in the supplied voltage based on first and second predefined reference voltages (V1,V2) respectively, with a condition, V1 <V2. When the supplied voltage is less than the first reference voltage, the discharge lamp is switched OFF. When the supplied voltage is greater than the second reference voltage, the discharge lamp is switched ON.
