The component (21) placed on the toenail surface (2) has previously been processed to impart a shape-memory to it, and is distorted from the latter on fitting in position. A nickel-titanium alloy can be used as the material. Alternatively it can consist of wire or strip. It can comprise a holding portion secured to the nail and securing a correcting one which acts on the nail in the correcting direction. The holding portion can be of larger area than the correcting one, which can be of super-elastic alloy.
