The damping unit includes a dosing roller associated with the immersion roller dipping into the container of damping medium. The dosing roller (7) can be driven by an independently controllable drive device using a self-blocking gear. The drive unit can be formed as a controllable gear which can be driven by the machine drive. The drive device (12) can be a speed-controllable electric motor (13) with worm (15) on the drive pinion (14) of the motor and worm wheel (16) on the axle pinion of the dosing roller (7).
