A method for separating hydrogen and methane from a high pressure flow of gaseous hydrocarbon containing at least hydrogen, methane, ethane, and ethylene, comprising the steps of: (1) recovering hydrogen gas from the high pressure flow of gaseous hydrocarbon containing hydrogen using a hydrogen separator for substantially separating only hydrogen gas prior to cooling the gaseous hydrocarbon containing hydrogen; (2) sequentially cooling the gaseous hydrocarbon in two or more temperature bands, arranged at least in series to effect a vapour-liquid separation in each temperature band with separated condensed liquids being supplied to a methane separation process and non-condensed gas to a following temperature band; and (3) recovering methane gas in a methane separating process, as well as condensed liquid substantially containing no methane, whereby a refrigerant of a higher temperature than in a conventional method can be used, thereby making it possible to set higher the suction pressure of a refrigerator to thereby reduce the power of the refrigerator.
|
