A cannulated tamp (20) having a proximal compressive flange (23A) is used for compacting bone graft material in a femur having a cavity being prepared to receive a femoral prosthesis. The tamp (20) of the present invention is particularly useful in achieving uniform compaction in the proximal area of the femur. The compressive flange (30) may be monolithic with the stem of the tamp (20) or may be a separate modular member (42) affixed thereto. Under one embodiment, a series of passageways (168) are provided for attachment to a source of vacuum for evacuating blood and other fluids from the prepared cavity.
