The device comprises a wheel engageable support (111) that has a tubular member (113) with a shoulder (119), and a bearing that may slide into the tube. Two parallel winch cables (121a-b) run through the tube and carry bearing heads which act on the bearing member. The device also incorporates a winch mechanism that has a pulley wheel (140) with two peripheral annular channels (143a-b). The cables are secured to the pulley wheel and received in the channels. The support is held by each cable, so that if one of the cable fails the support will still be held in place. Rotation of the pulley wheel raises or lowers support to allow access to the spare tire when required.
