In equipment for treating feedstuffs or feedstuff components, such as oil seeds, oil-bearing crops, leguminous seeds, soya beans, rice bran, etc., in an expander housing having a material inlet, pressurisation and expansion zones, steam inlet nozzles and a screw with differently designed regions for the pressurisation and expansion, the screw (10) is provided, in the material inlet (11) region ahead of the steam inlet nozzles (12), with one or more preferably conical dams or barriers (13) which restrict the advancing material to a narrow annular gap (14) and prevent steam exit to the material inlet (11).
