The invention concerns a process for thermo-mechanical surface treatment of webs, particularly paper and cardboard webs, and means to carry out the process. According to the claimed process, the adhesion between the web and the surface of the tool used for the thermo-mechanical surface treatment, e.g. a roller or press, is reduced or eliminated by the application of an abhesive agent containing dicarboxylic acid esters-dialkylesters and/or esters of saturated and/or unsaturated C8-C18 fatty acids with multivalent alkanols with 3 to 6 carbon atoms and/or single or multiple unsaturated C16-C12 fatty acids as abhesive components. The preferred use of abhesive agent is in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion which is either applied to the surface of the tool used for the thermo-mechanical treatment or added to the impregnating liquid, paper-coating mass, fountain solution or the steam for pre-moisturising, or is applied to the paper web after the impregnating stage, or directly in front of the glazing roller. Steam-volatile abhesive agents are preferred and are metered into the steam moistening process via the steam line.
