The projector headlamp includes a light source (41), a lens (16), a reflector (12) and a shield (13). The reflector is arranged to reflect light from the light source through the lens to produce a beam. The shield is positioned in the light path between the light source and the lens, and is arranged to block a portion of the light from passing through the lens. The shield has a working edge arranged to define one edge of the beam. The working edge is uneven to reduce the sharpness of the edge. The shield may be positioned at right angles to the light path and may have an opaque plate. The shield can be positioned between the reflector and the lens. The working edge may have projections, or can be serrated.
