Electrolytic process and apparatus for the controlled oxidation or reduction of inorganic and organic species in aqueous solutions

An ion exchange material is treated to convert a portion of the transfer sites to semiconductor junctions which act as mini anodes, or cathodes, to significantly increase the capacity of an electrolytic reactor containing a packed bed of the material to oxidize or reduce the species to be treated. Specific materials are formed by oxidizing ferrous ion bonded cross-linked divinylbenzene sulphonated polystyrene cation exchange resin; by bonding Pt 4+ to a cross-linked divinylbenzenes sulphonated polystyrene cation exchange resin; and by sulphonating the hydroxyl groups of a cross-linked divinylbenzene aminated polystyrene.
