This invention relates to an axial piston engine comprising a centrally positioned output shaft 1 and a number of piston/cylinder arrangements 2 which are parallel to and grouped symmetrically around said output shaft 1, a bracket 5, fixed on and rotating with the output shaft 1, for an inclined plate 4 which is mounted freely rotatably on the periphery of the bracket 5, members 6, 7 which prevent rotation of the inclined plate 4 in relation to the body of the engine, and piston rods 9 which are provided with ball joints and connect each of the pistons 12 of the engine to this inclined plate 4 so as to transmit the pushing action of the pistons 12 in turn to said inclined plate 4 to bring about the rotational movement of the output shaft 1. The invention is characterized in that the edge of each piston 12 has rotor blades which are acted on by an air flow generated by the reciprocating movement of the inclined plate 4 in the base chamber when the edge of a piston 12 projects out of the cylinder 2 and bring about some degree of rotational movement of the piston 12. <IMAGE>
