PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device which uses a Freedericksz transition and enables a halftone display by rubbing orienting films to give the orientation direction and a pretilt angle and then irradiating the film with light. SOLUTION: The orienting films 2a, 2b facing each other are rubbed in the opposite parallel directions. A pixels x is formed in each area where an upper transparent electrode 4a and a lower transparent electrode 4b cross each other. In each pixel X, plural pretilt angles are given to the orienting films 2. For example, the pixel x is divided into four regions D1-D4. The angleθbetween the director 9 of the liquid crystal molecule and the surface of the orienting film 2 isθ1 toθ4 in the region D1 to D4, respectively, satisfyingθ1<θ2<θ3<θ4. A driving circuit DR supplies reset pulses to cause a Freedericksz transition and selecting voltage to select a metastable state to each pixel. In the display mode, a halftone display can be obtd. by making difference in the area ratio between a bright state and a dark state in the pixels. |
